Love your old buildings or lose them!

"Love it or Lose It"

A free and practical guide has been launched to help owners of historic properties to maintain their buildings and preserve them for years to come.

‘Love it or Lose it’ has been published by the Wisbech High Street Project as part of the Heritage Lottery Fundʼs Townscape Heritage programme to help owners of older buildings across Fenland to understand the importance of regular maintenance and what to look for when carrying out inspections.

It also explains the current laws and regulations around altering properties which have listed building status or are in a conservation area.

Councillor David Oliver is Portfolio Holder for Heritage at Fenland District Council, which is delivering the Wisbech High Street Project with partners as part of the Wisbech 2020 Vision. The scheme aims to restore a number of buildings on the High Street, bring empty properties back into use and transform ‘The Gap’ at No.24 into an exciting new area for public use.

Cllr Oliver said: “Lack of maintenance is one of the main reasons why old buildings deteriorate. Carrying out routine inspections and maintenance helps to protect the fabric of our historic buildings and assures their longer term survival for future generations to enjoy.

“Maintenance is the most practical and economic form of building protection. By carrying out basic maintenance, the expense of major repairs can often be avoided and at the least postponed. Research shows that for every £1 saved by not carrying out preventative maintenance it could cost £20 in repairs within five years.

“Love it or Lose it contains some great advice for owners of older properties, but it also has guidance which can relate to buildings of any age, especially tips on preventing damp.”

The booklet can be downloaded from our resources webpage.

It is also available to download from the Heritage page on Fenland District Council’s website at: https://www.fenland.gov.uk/heritage and free hard copies are available from the Council’s @Your Service shops and community hubs.
