FREE TALK: Discover more about medieval tiles and their local connections - Tuesday 25th January - 6pm

A medieval tile maker will be demonstrating the traditional craft and talking about tiles with historical connections to Wisbech at an online heritage talk later this month.

‘Medieval Tiles’ by Karen Slade is the next talk to be held by experts Lincoln Conservation, in partnership with Fenland District Council, as part of the Wisbech High Street Project activities programme.

Registration is now open to join the free talk, which is being held online via Microsoft Teams on Tuesday, 25th January, at 6pm.

Trained artist Karen Slade, who has delivered creative arts, history and medieval demonstrations and training courses across the UK for over 20 years, has a huge passion for making medieval tiles.

Commenting on the talk, she said: “Just 15 miles away from Wisbech by road is the site of the Bawsey Medieval Tilery, which supplied tiles to Priories and churches in Norfolk and Lincolnshire. The tiles are unique to this area and kiln and have geometric patterns and flowers as well as animals and some very Viking-style Dragons! I will show making methods for more typical medieval tiles and look at tiles from other East of England sites too.”

Cllr Chris Seaton, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Heritage, said: “The breadth of heritage skills subjects available through our talks with Lincoln Conservation has been fantastic, and this latest offering is no exception. I really would encourage people to join in and get involved, whatever your interest in local history and arts.”

The talk is completely free to join thanks to the Wisbech High Street Project, which is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Townscape Heritage scheme.
