Last chance to apply for Wisbech High Street grant as more funded works get underway

The countdown is on for Wisbech High Street property owners to apply for a National Lottery grant to restore their historic buildings – as more funded improvement works get underway.

Owners and leaseholders have until Tuesday, 30 November, to apply for a grant through Fenland District Council’s Wisbech High Street Project, which is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Townscape Heritage Scheme.

The reminder comes as works begin at No.18 Wisbech High Street, owned by Neil Bullen, who received a match-funded lottery grant of 65% towards his renovation project costs.

The works include restoring the historic shop front, with replacement signage and timber windows and door to better suit the character of the building, and essential roof repairs to ensure the building remains watertight and protected for years to come.

With the major restorative works at No.13-17 also nearing completion, Mr Bullen is looking forward to playing his part in regenerating the bottom end of the High Street.

“I’m delighted that I had the opportunity to apply for a grant as it helped make these improvements possible,” he said. “It will make a huge difference to my building now and in the future, and complement the other regeneration works taking shape. If any other property owners have thought about getting involved in the scheme, I’d urge them to do so.”

Cllr Chris Seaton, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Heritage, added: “It’s great to see even more sympathetic restoration getting underway on Wisbech High Street. With significant developments due to begin at No.24 and No.11-12 next year, the town’s distinctive and unique historic qualities are being steadily brought back to life. Not only is this project helping to improve the look of this busy area and transforming the High Street back into the impressive gateway it once was, but it is also preserving and restoring some of Wisbech’s important historical features and character for future generations to come.”

“Grants to help other property owners restore their buildings are still available, but not for long. I would encourage them to get in touch now before they lose the opportunity.”
