Wisbech High Street Gutter Clean Day - 2017

Our first Wisbech High Street Gutter Clean Day took place on Thursday 23rd November 2017, linking into Society for Portection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) Building Maintenance Week.

We had fantastic support from project volunteers and the Wisbech Society who braved a very cold wintery day to help hand out leaflets, telling passers by about our work and to help move the barriers along. We had a Conservation Officer from Fenland District Council join us to help and she was able to take advantage of the cherry picker to check up on the condition of rooftops and architectural details not normally visible from ground level.

Literally bucket loads of vegetation and soil were removed from the gutters, hoppers and above the shopfronts of several shops – we even found a crop of potatoes growing above one shop! By undertaking the simple task of clearing gutters and downpipes of blockages, issues of damp and brickwork deterioration can be avoided.

The team from Turners Contracting were fantastic and so efficient that we had time left over! We decided to take this opportunity to help out our neighbours at The Rose and Crown and Etcetera and with their consent cleared their hoppers and parapets too!

Next Year we hope to run the activity again and may look to venture beyond High Street and help some of Wisbech’s other nearby historic properties who may benefit from the gutter cleaning event.
